The absolute worst thing about modern customer support is when a bot, or even worse, a human, doesn't answer the exact question you asked, but instead answers another, tenuously related question, for which there's a canned response. I can somewhat get it for mainstream services (see my whole idea that the society should not force people to use technology, it should be a choice), but I've also ran into this with Google Play developer support.

One thing I dislike about Java is these kinds of arbitrary null restrictions in the standard library. I don't get this. Why can't you have null elements in an unmodifiable collection? What if you need to? What would break if this would be allowed? I've already had a few bugs and crashes because of this.

You know what I miss about technology these days? When I was a teenager, it was a common occurrence when I'd see someone use some new gadget and envy them. It felt like these things gave you superpowers. This just doesn't happen any more. Software updates are terrifying, not exciting. Literally the only time I was somewhat excited, albeit skeptical, about new tech in the last 10 years, it was the Apple M1. And yeah, that one did not disappoint me coming from a 2012 retina MacBook.

I'm adding support for multiple public keys per actor in Smithereen for future-proofing purposes. Are there any signature algorithms other than RSA currently in use on the fediverse? ECDSA maybe? #ActivityPub #mastodev

Android 17 has this nice feature where if you update an app (even via adb) while it's open, it'll relaunch it automatically after the update is done installing.

"You should target the latest Android version" but at the same time no instructions on how to do that, lol. A classic case of Google being Google.

Added + concatenation for arrays: https://github.com/grishka/Smithereen/commit/bfa3dfdbaf8a63edd2d97edeff5b9452414aee59 Now friends.get returns a permission error for some reason. It shouldn't do that. A token that was obtained using password grant should bypass all permission checks, but for some reason, in this particular case, it doesn't, hmm.

Pro tip for fediverse developers: you most probably have to look at ActivityPub representations of things a lot. And you most often have these things open in your browser already. So, add https://browser.pub as a search engine like this, so you could just type "ap " in front of the URL in your address bar to see that object as ActivityPub JSON. Using BrowserPub instead of curl or a REST API client has the bonus that the request is signed and some servers require that.

Ugh, I started a database migration on my Smithereen server to add a full-text index to posts. That was around 1 AM. I hoped it would be done in a few hours. It's the middle of the day now and it's still running and only 81% complete. I really need to figure out how to do these sorts of things without downtime. I also really hope it's the last time I have to add columns to the posts table which contains 2.8 million rows and will only grow over time. I'm sorry to everyone who us...

RE: https://chaos.social/@grote/116257002625921666 At this point I'm convinced that there's something deeply wrong with how our society treats technology. Ruining Android for everyone to try to maybe help some rather technologically-hopeless groups of people is the wrong solution. It's unsustainable in the long run. Also, the last thing this world needs right now is even more centralization of power. Especially around yet another US company. (1/2)

I realized why us millennials miss the technology of the 2000s and early 2010s so much. This was the period when everything was already mature and reliable (operating systems had memory protection and preemptive multitasking!) but user respect was still very much the default. Dark patterns were rare — the only one I remember was some installers trying to sneak the Yandex IE toolbar. The only modal popups there were on websites, were ads on the shady ones.

I'm trying to fix one thing that really bugs me about my video decoder. In short, that fix involves converting my simple arrays of samples into I/Q, the kind that SDRs use. And that involves FFT. And that means I can't get this meme out of my mind

Honestly, getting blocked on the other side like this is worse than the censorship imposed by the Russian government. The censorship can at least be easily circumvented using multiple methods, some of which work completely autonomously. This performative bullshit, however, requires a VPN or a proxy server in another country. No other way around it.

Once someone just left their users alone without constantly pestering them about so-called "account security", and their ass fell off. I didn't do anything in particular that could possibly trigger that notification. It appeared on its own, together with (1) on the settings app icon. Translation: Apple ID phone number check To always have access to the account, make sure that the phone number is specified correctly.

I'm setting up a macOS Tahoe VM to test some things and omg is this thing pushy when you try to make what Apple considers bad choices. "Are you absolutely certain you want to have things your way not ours?" It's also ridiculously slow to do anything at all, on an M1. I already had to reinstall it once because it got stuck with nothing but the wallpaper on the screen and I got impatient and force-reset it.
