@lexiconista@mastodon.ie I briefly considered pursuing a PhD. My partner (who is one) convinced me not to. Part of that was me realizing the main reason I was considering it was so that I could insist on Dr. instead of an otherwise gendered honorific 🤣

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie Hmm, my official (part-time) PhD duration is 8 years: which 15 are you saying will be the best ones?

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie OMG this is so very, very true. Having just finished my first year of coursework, so I have only 18 years left, I think.

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie My son is saying the same thing right now. He would probably add that you may earn very little when you start, but you’ll earn even less when you’re done.

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie I once had my pen on the form to sign my name, everything was arranged to do a PhD, and I stopped – something said ‘don’t’ Instead I just carried on lecturing after my MSc for another several years until it turned into mostly admin

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie After I got my Master's degree, I had folks I work with joke that I'd go for my PhD next, but it never really occurred to me. They said it because they figured I loved school so much that it was inevitable I'd just be an eternal student and stay in school all my life to learn learn learn. The trouble is I didn't WANT to stay in school forever--I wanted to find my place elsewhere and use what I'd learned in a career outside of teaching public school (which was pretty much the only option I could think of at the time). That was the main reason I got my Masters, thinking it would give me a boost in the market and get me into museum work or research, most anything. Well, I learned too late that my degree is too broad and too limited at the same time, at least in my area, and I can't afford to move anywhere, so it has hindered me more than it helped. The irony is I probably would've been better off pursuing a PhD to become a history professor, since my experience proved I had a hard time making my way in the real world outside of a school or otherwise heavily academic environment. I'm actively trying to get some of that mojo back and revisit what I'd learned for my Masters at least, so as to build up my writing and editing skills to get online work in the next few months and turn that into my more fulfilling career where I can save money and work from home. Funny how I hadn't thought of this in a while. Glad I read this this morning, I needed to remember that.

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie When I did mine, I was given a cutoff date of the end of June (2002) that I absolutely *had* to get it submitted by, to come in under 4½ years out of the allotted 3. I am pleased to say that I managed to submit on only the 45th of June. (Being friendly with the faculty office admins can be really helpful).

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie after almost 10 happy years of those three I said "Not anymore!" and just dropped this project. From that day on, I was happy at work and still am. You don't need that PhD. It's irrelevant for most of the companies anyhow.

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie good mate of mine finished his PhD recently. It was hard work, but a wonderful experience. The secret? He's 56. His original arsehole gaslighting thesis advisor had retired. His new thesis advisor had been a fellow top student in the 1990s who had stayed in academia and with whom my mate had always had an excellent relationship.

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie Sure, except they hold all the power in higher education in this country. Besides, I have thirty years of teaching experience and I would not tolerate some inexperienced researcher telling me about teaching. I’ve learned how to learn so I can learn anything I want to learn.
