@lexiconista@mastodon.ie After I got my Master's degree, I had folks I work with joke that I'd go for my PhD next, but it never really occurred to me. They said it because they figured I loved school so much that it was inevitable I'd just be an eternal student and stay in school all my life to learn learn learn. The trouble is I didn't WANT to stay in school forever--I wanted to find my place elsewhere and use what I'd learned in a career outside of teaching public school (which was pretty much the only option I could think of at the time). That was the main reason I got my Masters, thinking it would give me a boost in the market and get me into museum work or research, most anything. Well, I learned too late that my degree is too broad and too limited at the same time, at least in my area, and I can't afford to move anywhere, so it has hindered me more than it helped. The irony is I probably would've been better off pursuing a PhD to become a history professor, since my experience proved I had a hard time making my way in the real world outside of a school or otherwise heavily academic environment. I'm actively trying to get some of that mojo back and revisit what I'd learned for my Masters at least, so as to build up my writing and editing skills to get online work in the next few months and turn that into my more fulfilling career where I can save money and work from home. Funny how I hadn't thought of this in a while. Glad I read this this morning, I needed to remember that.
