Cinco de Mayo is an utterly strange non-holiday. It’s not Mexican Independence Day which is in September. It’s not even a federal Mexican holiday. It’s just the fifth of May. Yet Americans insist on wearing sombreros, drinking Coronas, and eating tacos in celebration of the Mexican Army beating the French, as if we give a shit.
Any excuse to drink tequila at lunch on a work day, I suppose. Pass the chips and salsa. #CincodeMayo

@dtm@mastodon.cc I just had a conversation with my sister about this. Her friend’s husband suggested they go eat and have drinks at an area Tex-Mex chain. He said “it won’t be crowded, there’s hardly any Hispanics living in this suburb.” They waited outside for over an hour to get in. Duh. This is a gringo excuse to drink, just like non-Irish Americans besmirch the Feast of St. Patrick with overindulgence and a fucking four leaf clover instead of the shamrock.
