What do people use for screenshots on Windows these days? I’ve been using the default snipping tool for ages which is fine except it lacks text annotation, which is always annoying (I often take screenshots and annotate them for bug reports etc). I started using ShareX (open source) which seems decent but I’m curious what other people use https://getsharex.com

  • Ohhh I was slightly struggling with the annotation workflow on ShareX because I'm so used to grabbing a screenshot region and THEN annotating the result, I found it weird that it doesn't pop up with a window to do that so I was trying to configure it so it did. Then I realised that when you start the clipping tool, there's a toolbar at the top immediately so you can annotate anywhere on the screen BEFORE you select the region. I didn't spot it because HiDPI made the toolbar tiny (now fixed) 👍

  • @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place ShareX is king imo, been using it for surely going on 12+ years now, the configurability and flexibility is unbeatable especially for quick videos, but just like you I use the annotation feature tons when taking screenshots/snips

  • @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place I've used ShareX for at least a few years, and it does the job well. There's heaps of features in it I don't use, but the basic capture of both images, videos and gifs is smooth.

  • @sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place I use shareX as well. It can even capture things like hover tooltips! Great program.

@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place I'm basic. I just use the PrintScreen key and do any annotation in an image editor. If I need video, I use OBS, which might be overkill but I already have it installed. I'll go ahead and add ShareX to my bookmarks though, just in case.

@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place using greenshot myself, but the only features I needed were manual save, auto-save to the last folder, and reshot the exact same area. Didn't investigate many tools at all!

@sinbad@mastodon.gamedev.place Using flameshot on Windows and Linux https://flameshot.org/ Has just enough tooling to be useful, and the UI is pretty clean - just tools arranged around your selection.
