Remember Don Martin, whose bizarro, sick cartoons were always one of the best things about MAD magazine? I did a deep dive on him and his work for the latest issue of @flaminghydra@thelife.boats, on the first day of our soon-to-be-legendary MAD WEEK! https://flaminghydra.com/don-martin-mads-sickest-artist/

@annaleen @flaminghydra I have that actual sticker sheet, unused, from the original issue! 🤩👍

  • @annaleen @flaminghydra I had the same love for him, thinking that itch otherwise unscratchable. And then I discovered Basil Wolverton, and I realized that there was a whole arena of artistic expression over there.

  • @annaleen @flaminghydra @NigelTufnel Just for those who thought Don Martin suddenly ‘came out of nowhere’, before Mad, Don Martin had worked illustrating ‘studio cards’ humorous all occasion greeting cards which were a ubiquitous craze in the late 50s, especially among the cocktail set. VIP Partch, who had been a visual gag writer in animation and had a tendency to give his characters extra fingers and toes was also in this illustration field of work.
