Did you know I have a new book coming out about a graduate student who is a slime mold from beyond the galaxy? Who comes to Earth to do fieldwork and meets a badass sex worker in ancient Pompeii? It's called "A Wall Is Also a Road." You can pre-order it now, which is a tremendous help for me as the author! (https://torpublishinggroup.com/a-wall-is-also-a-road/) Also, I am going on tour in September and October, so please come say hi!!

Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco is no longer a place of honor. On top of all the depressing automation of the experience and loss of what used to be amazing, beautifully curated pre-show content, the new food app seemed designed to prevent people from tipping the hard-working servers who have to run around in the dark. #sfba

You know you have cognitive overload when you look at your to-do list and realize that item number one is "do the" because you got so distracted by everything you have to do that you forgot to actually list what it is that you need to do

My latest essay for @flaminghydra@thelife.boats is about why I hate the phrase "we're living in the future," and why it is that we hear it so often during periods when history is being violently erased. Read this essay and many more when you subscribe to Flaming Hydra, a collective of artists and writers (yes, we share all profits equally!). It's only a few US $$ per month, and you get a daily dose of original writing and art!!! https://flaminghydra.com/the-wave-of-the-present...

I went to Pizza Hacker for dinner and now I am extremely full. I also have nostalgia for the days when social media gripes included gems such as: "tweets are just all about what someone had for lunch."

We are not "living in the future." We are living in the present. The future is something different that hasn't happened yet. I know this sounds facile, but once you ponder it for a while you start to realize how pernicious and constraining it is to our imaginations to confuse the present with the future.

Ever since playing with ChatGPT, I've become sensitized to the way false rationality sounds ... there's a particular vibe to what is basically coherent nonsense. And now I've started to notice when people do it too. I get this crawly ChatGPT feeling when somebody is obviously making up an "authoritative" answer to a question they know nothing about. #AI #chatgpt #psychology

I am so excited to share this story with you! It's partly a response to the many people who read The Terraformers and asked me, "What happened to the worms after they were able to speak?" But it's also a standalone story about what it's like to celebrate your body, no matter what form it takes. https://www.uncannymagazine.com/article/the-best-ever-cosplay-of-whistle-and-midnight/

What are you going to read this week? Celebrate spring with Cameron Reed's new novel "What We Are Seeking," a planetary settler tale with brilliant ecosystem worldbuilding, plausibly alien intelligences, and satisfyingly complex queer families of the future. So good. https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250364739/whatweareseeking/

At last I can announce that AUTOMATIC NOODLE is a Hugo Award finalist! It's also a finalist for the Locus and Nebula Awards! This has never happened to me before, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate all you fine nerds and friends for voting for this little book about robots who just want to make noodles. I spent many late nights on Mastodon while writing, and got live feedback on some of my ideas from many of you! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Gotta love tech journalists who describe Mastodon as "that impossible-to-use website." First of all, it's an app. C'mon. Second of all, aren't these the same people who write breathless explainers about the wonder of cryptocurrencies, which are not only impossible to understand but literally built from bullshit?
