What is so specific about phone numbers that you can't achieve with (disposable) email accounts? Original: would that mean that I can "drop" my phone number based account and create an "anonymous" (email based?) one?

@knoppix95 @signalapp I wish we could get a proper native Linux desktop app, rather than Electron. ... and as long as I'm dreaming, one written using a sane GUI toolkit, not Gnome or GTK3+. ...oh, and binaries (or easy build procedures) for the BSDs, as long as I'm dreaming here. 😄

@knoppix95 @signalapp A step in the right direction but they still require you to give them a phone number. 🙁 BTW, what happens when someone set up their acct with their phone#, then they lose that number because they don't keep up their phone service subscription? Especially if they've set up and still keep using the desktop app that was linked to that phone #? If that's a possible scenario, then someone else will eventually get that number, so wouldn't they be getting the original person's messages, or not be able to set up their own signal because their number is already active for the original person? I don't know how it works since I've never used it, but I've wondered about that.

@knoppix95 @signalapp To register on Signal Desktop, a phone number will still be required. However, this can be either a mobile number or a landline, including basic mobile phones or dumb phones. This will make Signal accessible to users without a smartphone. ugh. what a nothingburger
