@danluu maybe the problem is that people don't want to make high quality software. maybe it's that LLMs enable people to not give a shit and they take it in droves which, I can excuse this for someone who is stuck in a position they can't meaningfully leave or they or their family suffers. but the most vocal proponents of not giving a shit that I've seen are people who are not in that position—some of them are people who could likely not work another day in their life and still be well-off

    @whitequark @danluu i feel like even ignoring the impact of meme technology du jour, the trick is always getting people to care about something. like, writing basic documentation has never been particularly onerous and people just don't do it because they think it's boring.

    @whitequark I agree people don't care, but the case I tried to make in the post (obviously not convincingly), is that, at any level of caring, they're going to save time if they test effectively. From having watched people at every level of caring about quality, down to zero, I think this is true at every level. At some point, devs who don't care will have breakage bad enough they need to debug it and they end up spending way more time on quality work than I would to hit the same quality bar.
