@whitequark I agree people don't care, but the case I tried to make in the post (obviously not convincingly), is that, at any level of caring, they're going to save time if they test effectively. From having watched people at every level of caring about quality, down to zero, I think this is true at every level. At some point, devs who don't care will have breakage bad enough they need to debug it and they end up spending way more time on quality work than I would to hit the same quality bar.

@danluu do they? or do they mostly get to push the breakage down onto people who can't avoid it, where they can? are there consequences for spending more time on a task you don't care about in the first place, other than "it takes longer" which in this case they clearly don't care about already?

@danluu @whitequark something I write about in https://dlants.me/ai-se.html#ai-productivity-gains-individual-and-organizationa is adjacent to this - choosing what to work on *is* the crux of the problem, pre and post AI. AI creates more opportunities for leverage and makes the levers larger... However the organizational ability to notice and exploit these levers is not so directly affected. In fact I think in many ways AI might provide affordance for an org to dig their own hole faster.
