  "Good tools are invisible" is something that I really don't agree with in general, but it's super funny to me when people use analogies to carpentry or construction to justify it, e.g. "builders don't have a fun hammer". Fuck off they don't! People in all fields have favourite tools, or tools they like to use even when it's not necessarily the best idea, tools which are fun or joyful. Tools they've customized into something they enjoy using.

  I wonder if there's an automatic way to extract a vendored sysroot from an oci image so that you can "cross-compile" for something like the steam Linux runtime without having to mess around with the toolchains in the container itself. Dealing with containers for just building code is so deeply unpleasant.

  one funny thing i find about open source is the way proponents often talk about proprietary software (derogatory), as if there's deep innate advantages to open source with regards to code quality or contributor ability (or whatever else). i... don't really find that to be true. there's plenty of hot garbage open source code, just like there's plenty of hot garbage proprietary code. there's plenty of prima donnas on both sides of the fence too.

  Lots of games have complex mission systems but idk why they don't just embed a web view and open a Jira account for each player. Then the player's quest progression can be properly managed in epics and tracked by production.

  used the jj operation log in anger for the first time today (i typed some stuff on the wrong repo oops) and it is *so nice* to have a vcs that gets the fundamental operations correct for the modern day. snapshot the working directory on every operation, undo and redo, plus an easy to use operation log with restore.

  There's of course a lot to be said for a static website, but there's something constantly nagging in the back of my mind that screams "YOUR WEBSITE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SLOW BECAUSE IT'S DYNAMIC". it makes me want to make my website not static anymore just to make the point.

  It's in some sense surprising how Google gets away with their stupid schemes to stop people clicking through to actual websites in their *search engine*. First there was all the amp bullshit, now they're trying for llm generated summaries which strip all your ads. The adblock that makes space for their own ads.

  Back at mum's house for a few days which means I'm back to being annoyed that it's the year 2k26 and I can't even get reliable 4g mobile here. The Nbn (national broadband network) was ruined so they could "cost cut" by focusing on copper deployments and fixed wireless and they can't even do a mobile network that works. Upsetting.
