@_jimnelson_@mastodon.social Many years ago, the Noe Valley Voice ran a piece on how the numbered streets in Noe used to have names, replaced with numbers in the 1800s if I recall correctly. For example, Navy Street was renamed 26th Street, which makes the fuss over Army's street renaming sound rather silly to me. Expect it to come up again now that Cesar Chavez has been disgraced in the public eye. #SanFrancisco #Map #Maps #StreetNames #History

@_jimnelson_@mastodon.social I always liked how Golden Gate Avenue doesn't go to the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, or the Golden Gate Heights neighborhood, none of which, in turn, are anywhere near one another.

@_jimnelson_@mastodon.social Very cool, and loved the linked stories of John's Way and the 1909 renaming (¿what happened to 31st St?). Surprised you left out Washington St/Washington Square as well as 3rd Street many intersections with numbered streets. I can understand you not including the numbered streets in Daly City, since that's outside SF, but they apparently have no relationship with SF's 1st through 30th streets. #SanFrancisco #Map #Maps #StreetNames #History

@_jimnelson_@mastodon.social Arguello was the first in a planned set of renaming the north-south Avenues to alphabetical names like they did with the lettered east-west ones, hence beginning with A. The rest of the project was abandoned. At least some of the duplicate names between the Presidio and the rest of the city are merely continuations of the same street. But the ones that aren't, are particularly confusing. And, of course, neither Lincoln Boulevard nor Lincoln Way are near Lincoln Park, which itself was the western terminus of Lincoln Highway (neither of which were named after the other).
