My niece got this for her birthday and no one is quite sure what it is. Can Mastodon help? The large piece is all wire netting and enamel, it couldn’t hold liquid. It came with four of the smaller cups in a set.

@catvalente A zarf? something you'd stick a paper cone into to use as a cup? but fancy!

@catvalente Looks like a lampshade repurposed into a centerpiece bowl? It's the base that reminds me so much of some inherited stuff I have that are art pieces refitted for new things.

@catvalente Unclear if the cups actually match but the bowl appears to be maybe shotai shippo (guessing based on presence of kanji on cups) - not sure the Chinese name. The cups look like sake cups to me. Possibly European plique-a-jour, same concept, but I would say Chinese if I had to guess. But I'm not an expert! Either way it's quite beautiful! https://www.galleryjapan.com/locale/en_US/technique/otherworks/70104/

@catvalente It looks like the technique used to make this bowl is called "plique-à-jour" -- like cloisonné, but without a solid backing. Here's a very similar item (down to the design style and wooden stand): https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.ebayimg.com%2Fimages%2Fg%2FblgAAOSwd7Zj9iv2%2Fs-l1200.webp&tbnid=b5F3FsJ86X0yhM&vet=12ahUKEwja2vW-jZmAAxWAUkEAHeK7AxUQxiAoA3oECAAQIQ..i&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2F234908261594&docid=Z9SbPCYbxkYdtM&w=1200&h=902&itg=1&q=Plique-%C3%A0-jour%20Bowl&ved=2ahUKEwja2vW-jZmAAxWAUkEAHeK7AxUQxiAoA3oECAAQIQ As far as I can figure out, these are purely decorative objects -- so the cups are probably unrelated.

@catvalente Maybe it says something on the cups that would point you in the right direction

@catvalente The cups look like Japanese ceramic sake cups, which often come in a set, usually including a small ceramic pitcher in a similar style (for warming and pouring sake.) I feel fairly sure about this, as my mother had a fairly good collection of Japanese ceramics - the thickness, form, the glaze, and the brushwork calligraphy all match up. The enamel bowl is very different. I think they didn't originally go together, but were put together as a set from different sources.
