@janbeta@chaos.social Oh! I used to do something like this with a friend in the 80s. Looking for the number of lives, and if you saw it decreasing when you died, trying to set it to FF to get 256 lives… Good times! 😄

@janbeta@chaos.social I'd love to do something similar by making tape-to-disc "installers" for the amstrad

@janbeta@chaos.social Back then I always wanted to crack a game, but nobody could afford the originals and my skills weren't that good of course. Eventually, I managed to copy the tape version of "Die Fugger" onto a floppy disk, and I also succeeded in copying the Gauntlet disk. But neither of them ever left our house. It was just to show off to my friends who already had the games.

@janbeta@chaos.social I really enjoy watching Bacchus of Fairlight talk about cracking on https://youtube.com/@FairLight1337/ every now and then, but at the same time I know that cracking is not for me. I just don't have the patience or the dedication to go through other people's disassembled machine code.

@janbeta@chaos.social We still have demo competitions. Would be pretty cool to have people come up with new copy protections, and then have a competition for who can break it first.
