I was watching a blackbird in my garden. He was staring intently into a bush and opening and closing his mouth (silently, not singing). He looked like nothing so much as a cat watching birds through a window.
Eventually he charged into the bush and I've no idea what he did then, until he eventually emerged and started singing on the fence in the usual blackbird way.
Is this normal blackbird behaviour? I can't recall seeing it before.

@RolloTreadway I saw a hen loose her temper and peck a sparrow the other day. I think child rearing makes them cranky

@RolloTreadway I have seen that before but I don’t know what it means. They do communicate quietly with each other when they have young. A quiet whistle which seems to me to be saying ‘don’t worry I’m here’. They also open their beaks to cool down. So maybe something like that 🤷♀️

@RolloTreadway When they chase another blackbird from their patch they generally do a victory shout.
