Attention #globaltalk #marchintosh participants: *please* validate your hostnames for DNS resolution. The Apple Internet Router waits ~45 seconds for DNS resolver timeout. Each invalid hostname causes AIR to take 45 seconds longer to start. That really adds up. See attached screenshot with colored highlights. (Note: hosts in yellow add <1 second to AIR startup because of CNAME; this is fine). Tagging known owners in Federated Tootspace: @torbar @Seg @kraptv . If anyone knows the social handles of Daniel Landberg (Oregon), and "AlexMac" (Germany), please tag them. Thanks!

  • @theirongiant This is in part why I started providing my curated gateway lists. To get rid of the noise in the coordination spread sheet (we really need a better way to handle this if it’s going to scale). My lists are available at Daniel’s Lab:MacServ:Public:NOC

@theirongiant @torbar @Seg @kraptv If you use the always-up-to-date IP list at PurrTopia:Pluto:Files, the names are all pre-resolved, and invalid ones are removed :) You can also generate these yourself using my GlobalTalk Updater utility: https://github.com/dremin/globaltalk-updater

@theirongiant i pre-resolve all the hostnames before passing them to AIRConfig for this reason. might miss some DNS updates but i am ok with this tradeoff

@theirongiant @torbar @Seg @kraptv My bad, I usually update the hosted AIRConfig list using a script that weeds out bad domains but was running the wrong one this year, I'll fix the list later today. Using the IP version of the list should still be fine

@theirongiant @torbar @Seg @kraptv some of us have IPs that change at our ISPs whim and use ddns to update them. I agree that purging inactive entries is a good idea. If people are rendering hostnames to IPs and not refreshing often that causes breakage.
