I am intending to get a JR Pass. Anyone want to dissuade me from that? Haven't done the calculations in depth, but from reading Seat61 it seems I'll get most of the value back from the few long distance Shinkansens (up and down the country), so any savings buying individual tickets will be marginal.

@hugh@social.crablab.uk depends a lot on your itinerary. The time limit, split between JR East and West and ineligibility for metro lines can all make it tricky to calculate.

@hugh@social.crablab.uk Back in the day it was a no-brainer to get. These days it's generally marginal unless you are doing a *lot* of long distance travel. The pain of having to take it through the manual gates and show staff verses tapping through with an IC card is enough to make me strongly consider not buying it next time I go.

@hugh@social.crablab.uk I got one too when I was in Japan. It's very comfy and definitely a lot cheaper if you take the train a lot.

@hugh@social.crablab.uk I was i JP 2 weeks ago for 7 days and decided against it: 350$ for JR-Central means you need to go more than 3 times the distance Tokyo -> Kyoto.
