@davemosk @Niall @phil_stevens why not alter the locus of power in Aotearoa? It's happened over and over again in human history. We need to stop accepting the 'softly' and 'gradually' approach. It demonstrably, over the course of our lifetimes, doesn't work. We need a *major* shift in political message and policy - something like what's just happened in New York City. The message has changed *abruptly*. The transition on the ground is happening in a human timeframe. But the status quo is gone.

@davemosk @Niall @phil_stevens Individual, distributed action will never be enough to counter this stuff. Collective, concerted action is necessary, whether channeled through a government or some other form of human organization. Precisely because it is not a level playing field. Me individually choosing to drive an EV, or to not subscribe to Netflix or Amazon isn't going to meaningfully move the needle. It's me living my own values, sure, but it will never make a difference to these massive entrenched interests. To @Niall 's point, in many ways big and small there's literally no way to live in the modern world (go to work, have access to telecommunications, eat) and individually act against them.

@davemosk @Niall @phil_stevens this individual action stuff is a distraction, not that you shouldn't take it, but it's not going to solve our problems. Fossil fuels are dominant because of years of lobbying, policy decisions, and subsidies. Individual action is not going to make cities that were designed for cars suddenly pedestrian friendly. Big companies love recycling and carbon footprints, because a focus on individual action distracts from holding companies responsible and from policy.
