@alan @veronica I remember a lot of Rules Engines were the thing in the lates 90s & early noughts.
Not many claimed it would be AGI, but they were one of many things seen as a replacement for human programmers/developers. "Our business folk will just go in and update the rulesets instead, and we won't have to pay those pesky programmers"

@johnefrancis @veronica The big market was supposed to be in legal. Lawyers are just big advanced algorithms after all, right? Right? Oh, they're not? It's not a $3B market (in 1988 dollars)? Oh, shit. Meanwhile, those algorithms are helping operators of Ontario's nuclear reactors ensure that they're running safely and that nothing is missed. Something I consider to be pretty damn useful.
