RE: https://hci.social/@fasterandworse/115731120513478963 Firefox's killer feature is that it's not chromium. That's the pull. Nothing to do with tab grouping or UI design. When your userbase is made of people who don't want bullshit, you are taking a risk with every new feature, especially the ultimate bullshit feature of AI

@fasterandworse I'm migrating to Zen - which is based on FF, but without the AI and other crap - for real this time. and fave FF extensions work: - cookie auto delete - firefox containers - privacy badger - ublock origin

@fasterandworse I already had tab groups. They were called "windows". I'm more than a little confused by this feature and I've turned it off.

@fasterandworse I mean, some of us DO care about UI design. But threatening competent ad blockers in Firefox to protect search revenue *is a choice*.

  • @fasterandworse I guess Mozilla cares more about the users it doesn't have than about the ones it has

@fasterandworse "It's not Chromium" matters to technical people who understand that a monoculture steered by an adtech is a bad thing. That's a complex technical argument. For the mainstream audience, you still need to provide some sizzle. Some of that can be jiu-jitsuing the opposition's bad moves (keeping ad blockers as first-class citizens) but you should have something exciting in the pipeline.

@fasterandworse no, i know many people who really like tab groups and tab containers. the point about them being woefully tone deaf regarding what their users want remains true, though

@fasterandworse I think there's going to be a @palemoon rising (among other things).

@fasterandworse the guy seems an odd pick, been at Mozilla for 12 months, takes over and talks about AI, stopping ad blockers and charging for subscription services. The majority of the user base would leave, are they trying to pump it up to sell or something?

@fasterandworse The UI design has been less and less of a selling point since they started aping that from Chrome too.
