2 questions I'm trying to answer as I get a business off the ground: > How much value is there in using mainstream social media for publicity (which we badly need) vs. its psychological costs (the thought of getting on IG is... ugh..)? > Are there optimal ways to use the #fediverse for this? Any thoughts? & since I'm hustling (sorry), here are links to the project: https://elftheory.substack.com/p/special-announcement https://lenoxinstitute.org/ Thanks, hope you're all ok, greetings from #NYC #business #socialmedia

@emma@assemblag.es I really want to believe the Fediverse is a place to promote independent business and artistic endeavours, but everything I see/read here tells me it’s ABSOLUTELY NOT. Perhaps I’m wrong - but the why is complex and a topic for another discussion. But assuming this is true, you’re left with . . . mainstream social media channels. Which as most of us know aren’t social in any sane way. They are stacked decks against the little person at the very best of times. A loved one uses IG and TikTok regularly to promote her writing career, she views it as the only way to get the message out to those who might want to engage with her work. She’s found very modest results that way, and in that sense it’s been positive. But it’s all balanced against the toll that ugly/stupid place takes on your mental health/psyche every goddamn day. Which is real.

@emma@assemblag.es This recent article from Lex Roman is relevant to your first question (and hints at a few paths forward): https://www.revenuerulebreaker.com/should-you-quit-social-7-entrepreneurs-on-their-social-media-free-strategies/

@emma@assemblag.es Some people seem to find fedi very helpful for their businesses, but I'm not sure how they are different from all the people who find fedi unhelpful. @hootalex@mastodon.social mentioned they get a lot of business from fedi, and I've bought bird art from them: https://mastodon.social/@hootalex/116035922330481606 I also recently acquired ollas from @potterybyosa@mastodon.social (although I haven't had a chance to use them yet), so I don't how fedi is affecting her business in general but it worked for me.

@emma@assemblag.es "we exist to help people make friends" caught my attention. It looks like you want LIAS to serve as a hub for education around a specific community, and you are clear about the subject matter. My guess is the fediverse resists "promotion" but welcomes connections, focused conversation topics and opportunities to join classes. I bet if you look for ways to facilitate the same kind of learning here as you do in LIAS, the promotion will take care of itself.

@emma@assemblag.es ... also I'm not in NY but if you're gathering a crew of autodidacts I'm super intrigued.
