According to Valve, they managed to run pretty much all x86 games (so far) on their new ARM-based PCs thanks to this FOSS project: https://github.com/FEX-Emu/FEX This runs together with Proton to seamlessly transcode Windows x86 games for Steam OS on ARM. FOSS is THAT cool! #foss #valve

  • @yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place I've been hearing good things from people on their Android handheld gaming systems with the newer chips like the SD8Elite (Gen 4 basically I think) or even SG8Gen2 and many Steam games.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place gamehub lite also can use feh, I've been using it to run stuff like the sims 2 on an android tablet with the same chip as the deckard, although it has active cooling and is a high bin. I wonder if they will do any tweaks or provide any solutions to handle common pain points, like JIT runtimes for Unity games, especially those with a bunch of C# code, which causes the performance to implode.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place Yeah, I think that's the most exciting news out of the announcement today. Sounds like it makes for a pretty significant performance hit (10-20%) but hopefully they'll be able to improve that over time.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place Oh neat!! I saw Fex mentioned and thought "oh they wrote a thing, like gamescope? cool! it'll be open source, right?" didn't know it was an existing project!

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place yeah. The Asahi project had cobbled something together for a while now (you could literally play more games in an (M1/2) Mac running linux than macOS). They even utilized the extensions that hardware has for helping with x86 emulation.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place valve, in my opinion, used to be, the most innovative company in the gaming industry. Half Life, Counter-Strike, Portal, Team Fortess, Dota 2, Steam, that's a lot of stuff. And now, besides the fact that they are not launching a lot of games anymore, they're still innovative in the gaming world, but in a different way, with technology, steam os, proton, and now, this VR masterpiece. I like valve

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place Been using that on my smartphone for months, thanks to projects like GameNative and Winlator. I hope this also means support for even more PC games running on Android, officially or otherwise.

@yurisizov@mastodon.gamedev.place seems simple in theory really, just do all the instruction translation being done on x64_86 processors on the software level.
