I think retro computing can be a somewhat cheap hobby if you're smart about it hunt for deals, know your way around sorting out things like storage and bootable media on old computers, aim for old laptops, even beat up ones…

I just noticed that the box of rice I have has a badge saying it has the name printed in braile. The sign is just a printed thing. So like, what is this, some sort of mockery? Oh LOOK this thing has braile on it, too bad that the intended audience can't SEE that because it doesn't matter either way. Like what the actual fuck?

protip: x86 is getting truly obsolete if you want to mess with 32 bit stuff, it's already on the way out, and it's going to get harder as time passes distros are dropping support, hybrid build of haiku is in a sorry state

https://gimp-0-54-410d78.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/index.html The GIMP, from before GTK, wrapped up in a flatpak you can run on a modern distro. Pretty lovely, so many things are consistent with modern versions, including the threshold tweaking for the fuzzy select tool, which is like one of my favorite things. The best UI was shockingly decent even back then.

The very first public release of The GIMP (0.54) had a community plugin written that did the map to sphere thing that was later turned into the spinny ball animation.

things you could technically do I think: run a voodoo with an old laptop by breaking out to PCI from cardbus, just the most unhinged eGPU (more like external 3D accelerator ha ha) setup imaginable

ngl, nugget laptops can be fun, you can get an entire toy to play with for peanuts if you want to experience an old thinkpad and make it do things even certain sought after models can be snagged for cheap if you search around, like the 600x I got, a beat up one and stuff, but I have one!

time extension has truly devolved into crashout posts about someone having used AI like holy shit at this point you're not even discussing retro gaming, just that someone on github admitted to using AI in a decomp or a recomp project

there's something really cool about emulating old computers in a web browser, being able to just instantly whip out some old os or something on the spot and mess around I remember full screening windows 98 one time in high school and just messing around and someone gave e a concerned look like I just installed that on the school computer and somehow just got 98 up and running flawlessly in a couple minutes
