@shyra the framing of this as " pining for inconvenience " is so irritating . if there was a convenient solution that was safe and easy to use most people would almost certainly be fine with that .

@shyra@bitbang.social So, I can either pay an ever-increasing amount of money per month to a scummy company, hope I don't get ads, hope the music I want is in their library, hope the music doesn't disappear from my library, and hope my internet connection is good enough when and where I want to play it. Or, I can buy the CD and either stick in the CD player for perfect quality or rip it to MP3 (or, well, OGG, but the principle is the same) and take it with me everywhere — and still more money goes to the artist than from a lifetime of streaming.

@shyra It's not modern tech that's the problem, it's the non-regulated nature allowing companies to sell a product that requires you to have an account giving the company information before you can use it, or buy e-books that are drm-ed so you have to have the company allow you access to it, (as with Amazon deciding to stop selling books for old readers) so you can't take "your " Book and put it on another company's device! Or give/leave your favourite book to your child or friend. Selling a car with facilities that are locked up until you pay a fee to release them - often a subscription! Products should be openly sold and be self contained and NOT require your details to work - this can be legislated by governments

@shyra Also let's be real, we have some way. Too much convenience to the point we have a disconnected view of the things around us. There's no true tactility to selecting a steaming service from a touch screen, but the task of physically picking out and inserting a CD does. There's a sort of memory that becomes winded to the thing.
