It's not modern tech that's the problem, it's the non-regulated nature allowing companies to sell a product that requires you to have an account giving the company information before you can use it, or buy e-books that are drm-ed so you have to have the company allow you access to it, (as with Amazon deciding to stop selling books for old readers) so you can't take "your " Book and put it on another company's device! Or give/leave your favourite book to your child or friend.
Selling a car with facilities that are locked up until you pay a fee to release them - often a subscription!
Products should be openly sold and be self contained and NOT require your details to work - this can be legislated by governments
