Oh yeah, I imagine they're hard to find at a manageable price. The harvest is basically wildcrafting as far as I can tell. I imagine a lot of them are laying on the hills and hollers there. But you have to be local to get them.
I love that your mom liked them. (I also have to resort to nondairy ice cream.)

@vervain you might like my recipe, using coconut cream and egg yolks. It's basically one liter of Aroy D coconut cream (the only kind with no garbage in it) to 3 egg yolks. I'm eating some right now. I have to use monkfruit and allulose to sweeten, but you can use sugar if you prefer.
