I ran this poll 2 years ago and 90% of the correspondents on mastodon told me there were no required AI usage at their workplace. I would like to ask the same question again in 2026: “Does your workplace have any AI related requirements, either as major project goal, in performance review, or with usage analytics tracking, against your own will?” Boost welcomed.

@bitinn I'm not sure how to answer that. I work in an AI lab -- the original one. Nothing I do uses or integrates AI, but nearly everything I do supports AI research. So I don't get evaluated on the basis of using the stuff, but I certainly do get evaluated on the basis of whether the network and storage services work well enough for graduate students to train and evaluate their models. (In part this is because "AI"'s voracious demand for compute has crowded out other avenues of CS research.)

@bitinn I'm going to say, No, at the local level I'm at. But administrative/exec ends, really high up, it might be a yes. They're not too bright/logical. Though, we use MS products, which is a forced yes, as copilot is embedded against my will. And we also use Google products. If I can convince the higher ups where I work to more Linux systems, away from MS, Google, and the like, this problem will be just voluntary (which is how it should be). Again, the exec end is not too bright/logical.

  • @bitinn If I go so far as to become a CEO of a company (KNOWLEDGEABLY this time) or an advisor, financially or otherwise, Artificial Intelligence will not be allowed to be used as communication generation or script management, it's that simple. Human judgement is a mental labor type. I am okay with it being used for infographics with actual statistics but I do not trust it's repositories for anything that peoples careers, and therefore lives and families stability, depend on in a company.

@bitinn This year it will be mandatory to show how you became more productive using AI in our performance reviews, at the company I work for. Unfortunately our boss is fully hooked on it, so when a colleague pointed out he cannot trust the AI's answers, our boss's suggestion was to just send the AI output to someone else to verify it.

@bitinn For now, we don’t have to use AI, but they are really pushing it. We had to go to this big conference that was run by some douche who made his money convincing other people they could leverage AI to solve all their problems. I think that guy was completely full of crap. They asked us to do projects with AI and report back. I was just not impressed. Plus the environmental impacts are a no go. Not to mention that it’s stealing peoples work, art, music, etc. Oh , and taking real people’s jobs. At my job using AI is a choice, and say hell to the nah.

  • @bitinn Completing a training course was mandatory. Using it is encouraged. Some people, including myself, are restricted from using due to policies around accessing old code repos. They're trying to use AI access as an incentive to move the repos to new systems faster.

@bitinn no, but some (including at the top) are pushing this bullshit hard and most coworkers aren't willing to resist, so it's coming from all sides now. my most concrete worry right now is that they're going to use one of those monstrosities for "reviews", apparently believing it can do this better, thus forcing it on everyone via the CI/CD.

@bitinn I'm in a wonky spot in this regard. My company doesn't require AI use, but the CTO is extremely excited for the possibilities it presents to save people time on tasks, and given how close I work to the CTO that means I should be using it. It's also become my play to get a job offer from being an independent contractor, as AI appears to be the only project that is getting enough new capital greenlit to bridge the gap on getting me a job offer as someone who's run local models at home. The problem of course is, I'm becoming increasingly jaded on AI and increasingly believe most of the applications of AI in the org will be replaced either with a human or with traditional code as soon as the license cost starts balooning (which it will sooner or later!)

@bitinn I own my consulting firm and we have a strict no GenAI / LLM policy. I have a staff of 2 who are both artists and were more then supportive; they helped write the policy. Because we do research and some of that research involves modeling, there's some machine learning that we do. But no generative AI. No LLM.
