Crime: I use a priv discord server to organize thoughts (channels for: uni, diary, todo). This works for me cause: 📚 multidimensional (channels, threads) 🖼️ allows media 🔎 has a robust search (lots of parameters) 📱 easily accessed from phone, desktop… 📝 old messages editable I kinda wanna move away to something that's 🔒 E2E encrypted 📁 self-hosted 🪶 lightweight (no voice) I fiddled with a markdown repo but too inconvenient…

A year later and a good chunk of my personal note taking is still on discord. I've been procrastinating on exporting my discord server messages as markdown and deleting that shit x_x I've moved some things to a syncthing-ed obsidian vault & while it's nice, but I feel like it serves a different purpose: more intentional, less spontaneous diary & quick notes. And media is much more annoying, search way worse.

@tea the obvious choice would probably be matrix except for the search thing, but matrix servers are a pain in the ass to host how about a xwiki or mediawiki? also another advice, enter "awesome " like "awesome selfhosted" into google and a github repo will most likely pop up with a collection of popular approaches and solutions in a markdown file https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted

@tea have you tried obsidian as the organizing layer for your markdown repo? I tried to use it and have many friends who actually use it and like it.

@tea why not go like for like in the replacement: a matrix server?

@tea If you are just using it to organize information and do not need the chat functionality, maybe take a look at Joplin. It can sync via various online stores. For self-hosting, you could setup your own webdav.

  • @tea@chaos.social have you tried obsidian? if you have an android you can use syncthing to sync stuff, but if you have an iphone i think you need to pay for their syncing service

@tea I think Zulip hits most of those, except E2EE I think.
