Why telling an indie dev to "make a different/better game" as a business advice meets with such strong resistance, sometimes even animosity? Do y'all really just want to make ONE SPECIFIC GAME and nothing else? I understand that it might be disrespectful of someone's effort when put in the way I did it in the first sentence... But this is by far the BEST way for us indie devs to get visibility (and sales). Some games just look more interesting and shareworthy than others. #indiedev #gamedev

@hardpenguin13 just to clarify: is this advice given when people ask for a business advice? Because if I am not looking for a business advice, well, I wouldn't appreciate receiving one. Can't speak for anyone else, of course, might be just a me thing

@hardpenguin13 Not every good game is a good product. Are you making art, or are you making products?

  • @hardpenguin13 Because what is "better" in this context?

  • @hardpenguin13 Maybe your advice is bad? If you're making your clients upset maybe you need to rethink your strategy. Like consider exploring trends in the genre or getting a better understanding of their project. Have you considered finding a target audience? Idk why marketers get upset when I give them advice on how to improve their marketing tactics. Are they really set on giving all their clients the SAME advice? Marketers who think outside the box are more successful (and sexier)

  • @hardpenguin13 is it the difference between art and illustration? Art ideally generates a strong emotion in the artist, illustration aims to generate a strong emotion in the viewer/customer. Some (indie game) devs are artists, some illustrators. Some of the most lauded games are made by artists, but for consistency illustration is more successful.
