when someone in the public eye is trying to defend themselves against allegations of wrongdoing (hello gianni infantino!) they say the accusations are ‘categorically untrue’. i looked up the word ‘category’ and was surprised to learn that its root is from the greek katēgoriā (= assertion, accusation). this is from katēgoros (= an accuser), made of kata (= down, against) and agorā (= assembly). the other surprise in english for me was the gap in meaning between category (= a class of things sharing characteristics) and categorical (= absolute, unconditional, without exception). they seem both to stem from the later greek meaning (assertion of something) but have travelled different paths. #wordplay #GoodMorning

today, from a quotation in lavinia greenlaw's book (the vast extent), i see that stephen crane used the word 'oilily' (in his novella 'maggie') and… i don't know what to think about that. crane was a careful writer (though i've not read much, and not recently); 'oilily' is a word that i would rewrite to avoid, and i thought anyone with an ear for language, prose or poetry, would too. oilily. say it. eewww. #wordplay

It was random Polish word play just appeared in my head without any reason. In Polish "anioł stróż" - guardian angel is pronounced similar to "anioł struś" - angel ostrich or ostrich angel. And I immediately thought I should draw it some day, like with many word jokes with my friend before. It finally occurred to me to wonder about the etymology of the word juggernaut, and it surprised me. It is from the Sanskrit word Jagannātha = lord of the world. And yet the common English meaning is ‘large lorry’. Comically mundane. I had imagined the -naut was from the Greek nautes = sailor (as astronaut, Argonaut etc) and was struggling to think what ‘jugger’ might be about. #TIL #wordplay

Just thinking, as you do of a morning, how great language is. How did we get ‘fuck all’ to mean nothing? And ‘sweet fuck all’? Coming to this as a ESL person would be befuddling. I love this sort of thing. Once we liberated the use of ‘fuck’ from all meaning (the adjectival use of ‘fucking’ as a meaningless intensifier did most of that work) we can use it in any way we like or need. Its presence in an utterance is as a receptacle to be filled by all the non-verbal messaging — tone, facial expression, gesture, context etc — so the correct meaning is conveyed. Fuckwit could mean ‘great at sex’ but it doesn’t. We know that from context. Ditto fuckhead. (But headfuck is different, just noticing that.) Anyway, language and meaning is fucking amazing. #wordplay

Today I learned that jaunt and jaunty are completely unrelated words, both in meaning and etymology. And as a result of my not knowing that, I’ve misunderstood the meaning of jaunty. Jaunty is an import from the French gentil (= kind, nice) in English meaning gentlemanly, cheerful, confident, and eventually smart and stylish. A jaunt, on the other hand, is an excursion, or a ramble; to jaunt is to make an excursion from place to place. The origin of jaunt is obscure, according to my Chambers, but they note that its early meanings correspond with the (now obsolete) word jaunce (= to prance, or cause a horse to prance). Jaunce also has an even more obscure dialect definition = a wearisome journey. Anyway, there you are: wear your hat at a jaunty angle while out on a jaunt. Or not. #wordplay
