@diazona@techhub.social @mxchara@seattle.pink It doesn't automatically ruin a movie for me either, but it sure is something I've seen enough of so absolutely weighs against it. I think also also that I can maybe see a good movie that _could've_ been in Waterworld, whereas with Solarbabies stupid is written write on the tin. So there are no expectations to meet. #monsterdon #SolarBabies #Waterworld

So I can't really make myself believe that #Waterworld had a lasting impact on anyone (except maybe for Kevin Reynolds, the director...his most recent directorial credit was for a Christian exploitation movie called Risen in 2016.) But I remember a bit of the buzz at the time this movie came out. Its particularly laughable attempt at depicting a world post-global warming was remarked upon. One of the reasons Waterworld became a film maudit is that it was perceived as a "message movie", and singularly inept at conveying its message. Thus I ask myself: could Waterworld's disastrous reception, derided as mere egotism and pretentiousness on the part of Kevin Costner (and then came The Postman, rubbing it in) have helped subconsciously persuade a lot of people that yeah, "global warming" was just some fake crisis ginned up by ivory-tower intellectuals? @diazona@techhub.social It's called the #UlyssesCut. You can look it up on Waterworld's Wikipedia page. I'm watching it now from the Arrow release. It's got 45 extra minutes. I just got a whole extra scene (I think) where the Mariner joins the survivors, leaves by stealing a boat go back to his wreckage, finds Enola's drawings, and comes back to save the survivors from roving Smokers and steals their jetski. #MonsterdonDoubleFeature #WaterWorld #MonsterMiru #UlyssesCut

And so Kevin Costner sets off into the sea replete with plants that will inevitably lead to his capture, torture, murder, and divulging of the whereabouts of Dryland and the demise of the last few humans and animals that somehow survived the Waterpocalypse, we can all rest assured that the inescapable outcome is the extinction of civilization and nothing matters. Yay? I guess? #Monsterdon #MonsterdonDoubleFeature #Waterworld

I have missed Monsterdon so much, oh goodness. But my chronic illnesses have been a little better lately, which is super good news, and I've actually been doing more energetic stuff on Sundays! Still. To miss most of Waterworld. It does make one rethink priorities. Thanks everyone! :D #Monsterdon #MonsterdonDoubleFeature #Waterworld

If they'd cut a couple of the grottier scenes (especially about mid-movie where things are really sagging) and stuck consistently with the Dennis Hopper scenes as counterpoint, #Waterworld would maybe have been a lot more crowd-pleasing. #Monsterdon
