I've always had a soft spot for the fishing village of Staithes on the north Yorkshire coast. It's rather quaint when the sun is shining. But when the storms roll in off the North Sea in winter, I imagine all sorts of sinister cosmic horror plots set around the dark, steep streets of terraced fishermen's cottages... #Staithes #coast #Yorkshire #horror

I used to think that the access down into the lovely North Yorkshire coastal village of Staithes was a bit steep, where local gradients average around 5.4% to 5.8% over long stretches and a few much steeper short sections. Then I visited Robin Hood's Bay and encountered gradients on the main bank reaching 30% (or 1-in-3 in old money). Safe to say, I'll probably need a really good reason to visit Robin Hood's again! Looking down onto Staithes from this vantage point, you can see the watercourse of Staithes Beck, pictured here at low tide. Interestingly, the stream divides the village in more ways than one with those living on the northside in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland, while those on the south side are part of the unitary authority of North Yorkshire! #northyorkshire #yorkshire #staithes #coast #july #summer #seaside #landscape #photography
