Might the social care crisis be eased by a reform to life insurance? Could it be refocused to pay out prior to death where the funds were needed for social care? Of course, this would still require expanded social provision for those unable to afford life insurance, but might reduce the cost(s) of reform. But unless mandatory there is the moral hazard of people deciding to risk relying on public provision... but if mandatory isn't this a privatised tax? #SocialCare #politics h/t FT

The problem of social care in the UK is primality an issue of funding: to socialise care (bring it decisively into the public sector) could cost (if the NHS free at the point of use model was adopted) around £18bn, with a cap on costs the cheaper option at £3.8bn & the Scottish approach funding personal care at around £7.7bn. And therein lies the problem: no Govt. as yet has been prepared to spend that sort of money on a solution. Will Andy Burnham's? #SocialCare #politics h/t FT

And still the DWP cannot get the carers' support system to work.... I've said it before: carers are doing socially vital work & should not be put in the position of unbeknownst to them racking up debts subject to onerous 'repayment' demands by the DWP. [Full transparency: I am in receipt of carer's allowance myself, but not effected personally by this issue] The review of social care needs to offer hope to those the DWP is abusing! #SocialCare #politics #DWP https://www.theguardian.com/society/2026/jul/18/scores-of-carers-overpaid-more-than-20000-last-year-despite-reforms
