#Egypt was one of the first modern, industrial states, only later held back by European imperialism. The #BattleOfBelenPass, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1832 during the #FirstEgyptianOttomanWar, saw a larger #Ottoman army crushed, effectively passing the #Levant to Egyptian control.

Britain was rebuked in the #LeagueOfNations on #ThisDayInHistory in 1933 for allowing #ChildMarriage in its #PalestineMandate law code. They first set it at 13 for girls, and lower under certain conditions, but raised it to 15 in 1936. Prior #Ottoman law used a minimum age of 17.
