Unlike #federal #elections, #Victorian elections have #GroupVotingTickets in the upper house – a system that enables the business of #PreferenceWhispering’ – back-room deals where preferences are swapped to elect MPs with a tiny share of the votes. This was being used to game the system. Right wing agitator, #AviYemeni, has been working to #register #fake micro-parties called the ‘Free Palestine Party’ and ‘Muslim Votes Matter’ with the explicit purpose of ChannelingVotes to #OneNation. Another #FakeParty project, #SaveTheEnvironmentParty was announced in February for the same reason: to #trick #voters. This election, that's changing. Instead of backroom deals and dark money deciding where preferences go, voters will rank the parties they want to elect to Victoria's upper house, just as they already do in the lower house. #VicPol #auspol #TheGreens

How to stop the popularity of One Nation and reduce the impact Hanson's so-called policies? Look at history. One Nation almost disappeared during the resources boom in Australia. Why? Because people were happy. Now, people are discontented, struggling with everyday living. Pauline Hanson just gave a whole National Press Club speech crying about cost-of-living pain, hungry kids, and energy poverty... while voting against basically every measure to fix it. Friendlyjordies absolutely torches her latest grift: ignoring Labor funding boosts to food relief, opposing school lunch programs, slashing welfare she'd rather give to Gina Rinehart's coal empire, and blaming migrants for problems her own policies make worse. Classic One Nation: weaponise real suffering, offer zero solutions except more division and tax cuts for billionaires. Pauline Hanson, leader of Australia’s populist One Nation party, lets fly with a whole list of grievances designed to appeal to those of Australia’s cash-strapped and struggling peoples who are not used to thinking terribly deeply about what is good and bad in Australian society. In particular, what stood out for me was: 1) her attacks on multiculturalism. Here in Melbourne taking a trip around to any shopping centre or marketplace you see people from all over the world, not just Northern European. We benefit tremendously from this, for one thing from the wide range of foods from all over the world that we have accepted as our staple and that makes shopping for takeaways such a delight. 2) Saying that working people can be lazy and are too hard to fire. In particular she attacks childcare and parental leave. This is the only reason why many people are able to work at all. Especially when wages are so low and rents are so high. For example a young nurse can take home between $60,000 and $70,000 per year. Compare this with how much a politician like Pauline gets! Paid and/or subsidised childcare is beyond the reach of many and childcare staff are among the lowest paid. 3) Her nasty and spiteful attack on a member of the press who was just asking a question. She obviously admires Donald Trump and has taken a leaf from his playbook. Disgusting. And many other things. I would be upset to see Australia go down the populist path like the United States and Great Britain.
