Somebody #ELI5 this for me - what happened to the linux kernel OOM killer that seemingly neutered it?
Back in the day it would _reliably_ kill processes that were consuming the most ram and now we have systemd-oomd in user space, and things like zswap "lets trade CPU for RAM" which IMO isn't better. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-build-meta/-/merge_requests/4863
If a system is running low on memory, it's probably already in a state where it's thrashing swap and performing incredibly slowly. Why are we taking more CPU away rather than relentlessly killing processes that are consuming RAM?
Why do systems with 16G of RAM today perform like systems of 96mb of 30 years ago? I swear to god we've forgotten how important it is to make effective use of resources.
