What do Taylor Swift, Drake and Harry Styles have to do with car accidents? A study by Harvard demonstrates the correlation between music and crashes. An expert’s explanation. Is there something that links the release of a new album by Taylor Swift, Drake or Harry Styles with an increase in fatal road accidents? Apparently yes, according to a recently published Harvard study on JAMA Network Open: on the days of release of ten of the most listened-to albums on Spotify in the United States between 2017 and 2022, road deaths were approximately 15% higher than on comparable days. The data is surprising, but precisely because of this it risks being read more than the study allows. The researchers did not verify that the people who died in those accidents were listening to those discs, nor that they were using their phones to do so, let alone that the music had caused distraction. They related two aggregated figures: on one hand the increase in streaming on the release days of the albums, and on the other hand the number of road victims on those same days. It is therefore a temporal association, not the demonstration of a cause-and-effect relationship. The article What does Taylor Swift, Drake and Harry Styles have to do with road accidents?
