Wiesbaden's residential streets are a survey of Jugendstil at its most theatrical. This red brick building has one of the most arresting door surrounds I've encountered: an allegorical female figure looks out from the plasterwork at the crown of the arch, flowers woven into her hair, flanked by two winged sphinxes with their wings spread wide. Below her, a circular leaded glass window sits framed by rosette medallions. The warm honey-toned wooden door underneath barely gets a look.
