RE: https://twit.social/@leo/116506133841024081 Bad actors using social media for systematic manipulation of opinion — so-called "coordinated inauthentic behavior" (#CIB) — is one reason why creepy little accounts whose behavior just DOESN'T ADD UP bother me even more than do overtly abusive or fascistic accounts. With hindsight, I now see that on eX-Twitter I was manipulated by the #Russian propaganda apparatus — by accounts that appeared superficially to be those of people communicating in good faith, but whose sole actual reason for being there was to skew public opinion toward #Russia and away from #Ukraine. I don't ever want to see Mastodon dominated by that kind of activity, whether instigated by #Russia or by any other actor, and I appreciate the efforts of instance admins to keep the Fediverse safe for authentic expression.

Chief TWiT :twit: @leo@twit.social

Well this is concerning.

I just suspended 14 Russian LLM generated bot accounts that were created around April 17 on my Mastodon instance, twit.social. Somehow they circumvented manual registration approval. I've turned on Captchas (much as I hate them) for new member requests in the hopes that will stop the bots. They must have discovered a registration bypass bug.

Thanks to IFTAS SW-ISAC for noting and reporting the bots.

The following domains have open registration, are being overrun by coordinated LLM bot spam, and are unresponsive to outreach requesting account reviews or refuse to remove these accounts. These may be added to the Abandoned/Unmanaged Denylist. Anyone with opportunity to help alert these admins please do so. https://iamveryti.red/directory?local=true&order=new https://imastodon.blue/directory https://h4.io/directory?local=true&order=new https://zirk.us/directory?local=true&order=new https://mastodon.lithium03.info/directory?local=true&order=new https://organica.social/directory?local=true&order=new https://wehavecookies.social/directory?local=true&order=new #SPAM #CIB #FIMI
