I've switched to another symposium for the next talk The speakers are trying to get to their PowerPoint slides to show them, and it is like seventeen steps of two-factor and Microsoft redirects to websites they don't need (like opening a Copilot tab when they just want PowerPoint) Microsoft is the WORST #BCCE2026

Well, my first impression of remote access to #BCCE2026 is… mixed The camera in the room was entirely out of focus for >5 min, but they fixed it Audio is good. Once the camera focus got fixed we have a good view of the room It's streaming in Zoom and somebody who is not presenting inadvertantly shared their screen The opening message is very good but the speaker (Bassam Shakhashiri) is in the habit of walking away from the microphone

Shakhashiri sets us up with the importance of science in society, with some nods to current events #BCCE2026

Holden Thorp, editor-in-chief of Science (one of the really really big scientific journals) is talking about public support for science (good), scientists (less good), and higher ed (also less good) #BCCE2026

He keeps referring to himself as a journalist, then deflects blame for media focusing on Ivy Leagues over other higher ed institutions for reasons of selling papers. Look man, if you're good at reporting, you should be able to tell a story people care about. If you only report on things people already care about, what are you doing? #BCCE2026

And now Thorp is talking about AI and all the problems it causes for journals and educators (slop articles, cheating in classes, etc) Except somehow it's still okay for Science staff to use it in their work 🤔 Make it make sense #BCCE2026
