Today in Labor History July 22, 1895: Nigerian jazz musician August Agbola O'Browne was born. He is believed to be the only black person to have participated in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi occupation. O’Browne had emigrated to Britain, and then traveled to Poland with a travelling theater group. He was the first African man to record a jazz album in Poland. In 1949, he joined the Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy in Warsaw. His code name was “Ali.” Before the uprising, he helped distribute underground papers. He survived the war and continued his musical career. He died in Britain in the 1970s.
