@loke@functional.cafe @troed@swecyb.com I think there is a line to be drawn between which competences you want to have full control on (and will not delegate them to a LLM), and which you do not really care about (stuff you want to spend as little time on as possible). The danger is the risk to put everything into the second category to the point you basically give up all control to the LLM. I am sure kids are not stupid and they will quickly adapt and learn how to use LLMs to their own real advantage.

@troed@swecyb.com My main concern is on the economic aspect. LLMs importance mostly come from the big tech industry that invested thousands of billion dollars in them, only to earn much less than 10% of that in revenue. There is no way they can achieve break-even any soon. Most of the effort to get some profitability is at the expense of even larger investments. What they are doing is building a bubble that might pop sooner or later. Whatever the way this crisis ends, the current situation will not last.

@troed@swecyb.com Not to mention the catastrophic environmental consequences, energy consumption, the strain of online scraping, the shortages on RAM and other components, etc. I've been using "small LLM models" that run locally on my PC. Even though their execution use far less resources than the big online models, their training did involve such big models in the first place (cf. model distillation), so they are not clean either. But all of this is even not my first concern about LLMs.

@troed@swecyb.com I am a developer and I do believe LLMs are useful when used correctly, mostly when you still understand what you are doing with it. The discomfort I'm having with LLMs is rather on the political and societal aspect. Big tech companies want us to use it for any purpose, all the time, and push to replace fully functional workflows with disfunctional, error-prone chatbots. There is economic pressure (they want to make money from it, and from us), disconnected from any goal to help people.

@troed I can understand that some technology being forced into our lives by Microsoft, Meta, Google etc, accompanied by misleading and hollow rhetoric, does not help accepting it. I would agree with the "just a tool" view, if there wasn't big tech forcing it to make us dependent from it, and therefore, from them. Mozilla also aggressively pushes technology nobody asked for. The backlash had to be expected. People need proof that tech is safe. It's too soon about LLMs. Why the rush?
