A reference to actor Catherine Schell of Space: 1999 just reminded me of the young pianist and singer Katherine Schell who released an album in 2005 and... disappeared, apparently. Not even sure how I came across her back then. I think she might have performed at a show that a friend of mine played at. But someone, somewhere, was still excited enough about space launches -- or this mission in particular -- to watch it live. A PA announcement from the office: "Turn on your TVs. The space shuttle has exploded." (Wow I choked up just writing that sentence.) For the next few hours, classes were effectively suspended. Period bells ignored. Kids were allowed to roam, find their friends, sit quietly together wherever they were. Adults of the time had seen some things. For students, this was our first national tragedy.
