🚀 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝! Today, 2 April 2026, after many months in the making, the Partnership program officially replaces our previous Membership model. 🎉
The new program has been shaped by feedback from our community on how to improve the previous model. One of the key features of the Partnership program is that it allows institutions to enter into flexible, customisable, Partnership agreements with The Carpentries 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬.

Earlier this week, our Director of Workshops and Training, SherAaron Hurt, delivered a lecture and workshop as part of the Ashton Speaker Series at the University of New Mexico Libraries, and we are so pleased by how well it went!
Titled "When Expertise Isn't Enough: How Connection and Belonging Sustain Learning", and relying on examples from volunteer-driven educational models, her talk reframed the notion of expertise by exploring how connection, encouragement, and psychological safety shape engagement and persistence in academic learning environments.
We are so grateful also to the Carpentries Instructors at UNM who joined the session! 💙

It's been a busy week away from the office for our Director of Curriculum Toby Hodges who attended the #deRSE26 conference at the University of Stuttgart!
He presented a talk on the developments around the AI Carpentry project, and also co-led two HPC Carpentry-related sessions.

📢 We have some BIG and EXCITING news! On 5 February 2026 our Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the adoption of @hpccarpentry as an official lesson program of The Carpentries, launching on 1 September 2026! https://carpentries.org/blog/2026/02/adopting-hpc-carpentry/ 🚀
From that point, The Carpentries will have four official Lesson Programs: Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, Software Carpentry, and HPC Carpentry! 🎉
HPC Carpentry teaches foundation skills for high performance computing, through inclusive, accessible, interactive workshops aimed at novices. This makes them a perfect fit with our mission to empower a diverse global community by equipping individuals with essential data and computational skills.
The HPC Carpentry project would not have made it to this pivotal moment without the efforts of many HPC Carpentry community members, past and present. The Carpentries and the Steering Committee of HPC Carpentry wish to thank everyone who has contributed to the project, hosted or taught a workshop, and engaged with the HPC Carpentry community up to now. At the beginning of last year, we announced that The Carpentries would sunset support for our previous lesson infrastructure, 𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘭𝘦𝘴, at the end of last year.
Over the last twelve months, lesson developers either transitioned their repositories to The Carpentries Workbench or requested that the Curriculum Team make the transition for them. Recently, the Curriculum Team has been archiving repositories that had not migrated to the Workbench.

We are so grateful for the generosity of the volunteer organisers of the Winter Analytics Summit for choosing The Carpentries as their charity of choice to donate to $3,300 worth of the summit's registration proceeds. 🙌 The summit was held on 20 - 22 February 2026.

LPGCs oversee the strategy of the lesson program, advocate for the project in their networks, and act as a point of contact for the project e.g., liaising with the Board of Directors, the Core Team, and the wider community.

We are thrilled with the renewed attention that The Carpentries has received for deciding to withdraw a $1.5 million proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF), thanks to a recent similar decision made by the Python Software Foundation (@ThePSF) and the shout-out they gave us when they announced it.
PSF raised $65K+ within 24 hours of making their announcement, an amount which rose to $135K+ within a week in solidarity funds from 1400+ donors and 270+ new members. This is incredible financial support to PSF from the Python community!
The Carpentries has an open appeal to our community and the general public for donations and sponsorships to help us make up the shortfall in funds due to our proposal withdrawal. We are deeply grateful for the encouragement and solidarity we received in response. We value all contributions!
Our choice came with financial challenges. In the context of our operating budget ($1.2 million in 2024), $1.5 million is a significant amount of money.The loss of those anticipated NSF funds, therefore, represents a substantial impact on our sustainability.
With this renewed attention to values-based decision making, we would like to use this opportunity to highlight The Carpentries' continued need for financial support. We hope that Python community members and like-minded organisations will also support the work of The Carpentries in some way.

In December we bid farewell to 7 Core Team members: @alycrall, Brynn Elliott, Eli Chadwick, @karen_word @kbarnes Talisha Sutton-Kennedy and @zkamvar.
They left us with a rich legacy borne out of care for and devotion to their work supporting The Carpentries and its community.
