Perhaps patients have their place but software patients make no sense. One big issue is that it is not practical to avoid writing a system that already exists because there are many, many ways to describe the same software system. It's so difficult to search every term that might be used that multiple people could have already patented the same thing and be unaware the other exists.

Using software one doesn’t understand to protect their child looks like a peak of irresponsibility to me. Understanding any software to trying restrict a child seems a sub-optimal way to teach children the computer skills to circumvent it and promotes them to hide their mistakes from you?

I’d like to try an alternative to SystemD but I don’t know quite enough to filter the list of OS options for a gaming PC. I have Mint on desktop (modern GPU) with and OpenSUSE 14 on a server.

for the average joe using the terminal is too hard The average Joe can certainly find it difficult to justify spending the time learning the terminal… but actually learning how to use the terminal is easy (and I’m tired of everyone pretending it’s not). If we tech literate people can put aside our low expectations then maybe we’ll find it’s easier to teach that expected. Then we can consider something like downloading apps by visiting websites (perhaps after dodging malware links from adverts in modern search engines) a solved problem: don’t do that. This is something which aught to be taught in school as part of using a computer but I imagine being tech literate goes against the wants of tech corporates that have their claws in education.

Maybe modern search engines are part of the problem here. A local computer geek can probably offer better advice (better “tech tips” if you will).

Mint is the most similar environment for Windows to more easily transfer over and get used to? I seems Mint kernel version is rather behind - does it support the latest AMD GPUs out of the box?

Pretending to be the average Joe to see what issue they may have certainly has it’s place - before an expert informs them of what they aught to do. That’s not to say people creating software cannot do better too but it’s falls on experts to teach the average Joe to do tech right. We shouldn’t send the message “don’t better yourself, just keep using abusive software”

The zed-industries Github repository lists Zed licenses as AGPL, Apache and GPLv3. The AGPL refers to GNU Affero General Public license, which does not limit others from competing. Unless you mean the fact that forks must share source code of derivatives when accessed over a network?

Never understood a terms of service existing if the project code license is GPL or such. Can’t this just be forked and cured of anti features, if people value it enough to do so? Binding arbitration (aka, if we break tge law you can’t sue us) aught to be illegal in every country.

I’m not an artist, I just write silly game systems. I took for granted that a handwritting machine was an easy assumption. I doubt AI companies even have the insentive to try and create physical handwriting/sketching but I see no reason to believe it’s impossible. Here appears to be a handwriting printer “holding” a pen. People can probably tell this was not human written but I just imagine a machine that can replicate human hand motion better - like a robot hand on a robot arm.

Hopefully interoperability of seperate apps as ‘part of a web browser experince’ can be improved to help all users. However, the less technologically inclinded will have to step up and do something if they want to avoid growing frustrations from an endlessly, enshitifying browser experience. Having a “do one thing” software design doesn’t avoid all issues of anti-competition practices, nor does it prevent anti-features. For that I’d look towards software freedom licenses (as opposed to proprietary software). We already have software that does some seprate parts of web browsers and comes with the OS; video players, text readers and protocol specific apps. The question is, are advanced users using alternatives like Gemini protocal? Hopefully activity will lead to others entering the new communities.

It’s too late to give (life) support. Web browsers are a dying ecosystem as it’s too complex to create competition. Why not abandon them and instead support software that does a seperatable part of what modern browsers do?
