Conservation of energy also applies to passive methods, every single W of energy not entering a building heats up the streets and other buildings in the area. And if you really want to focus on the last 10% additional energy it takes to run heat pumps…then we really have to talk about all other main electricity and fuel uses in a city as well.

@pettter@social.accum.se absolutely! I just made the point that passive cooling like shutters, or painting the roofs white etc are 90% the same as active heat pumps like AC. Some people have this irrational fear that AC “heats up the city” but not that “closing the shutters” heats up the city.

It's interesting that some people say "oh but you shouldn't use AC, it makes the outside even warmer" but they never say "you should never use shutters, if you don't let in the heat it makes the outside even warmer!" Modern heat-pumps typically move at least 8x as much existing heat than they generate by performing the work of moving that existing heat,, so that's only around 10% in addition. The two cases are roughly 90% the same.

Btw the counterfactual for the “AI is really good at finding vulnerabilities” is if all the attention related to “AI exploit finding” simply increased the attention to finding vulnerabilities, without AI significantly aiding in the process.

Critical reading: when someone writes “up to 97%” you really got to trust the integrity of that person.

Because a person with integrity will only use this formulation for 96.x% figures when it makes sense to round up.

A less principled person uses it with noisy data, eg success rates of 50% on one day, 70% on another and 97% on another day.

So the longer-term average might be a coinflip but an outlier of a day can have 97%.

The problem with the argumentation that letting Israel take part in Eurovision is just about artistic freedom, is that the format is explicitly about representing countries.

Israeli artists and musicians are free to take part in events when it’s about them.

For example I quite like Infected Mushroom and if they have a gig nearby I gladly take part.

Eurovision is something else and Israel shouldn’t be allowed to take part.
