@voluminum@meow.social @KimCrayton1@dair-community.social That's a slightly different tangent (popular music vs classical music/ elitism/ classism etc.). Many popular musicians have been branded as geniuses over the last 100 years. Very often though it has been artists who appropriated Black culture and erased the cultural/historical/musical origins.

@KimCrayton1@dair-community.social I find that the term genius is also often used in order to strengthen the status quo. Take for example composers: Who are the geniuses that may not be questioned and who are constantly at risk of "being forgotten" if we dare make room for others in the concert hall? You guessed it: Bach, Händel, Mozart, Haydn Beethoven... ...White men.
