We were surprised at the end of the show with a backstage tour. Falstaff’s body suit is quite heavy as are some of the costumes he has to wear on top. We also learned an interesting quirk of the Dorthy Chandler Pavilion — because opera singers have to naturally project (no mics) and the acoustics in the building are not great (it wasn’t built for this) the singers have to look straight out at the audience anytime they are singing to have their voices carry.

A night at the Los Angeles Opera with Falstaff. This poster was very amusing to us as we happen to be friends with the lead opera singer portraying Falstaff this evening.

@PSchweig86@dice.camp FWIW, the No-Minis rules are like all of 4 A5 pages? It took me maybe 20 minutes to "eyeball" how to merge them. So I think with a capable hand it is possible to explain them to a kid or beginner who wanted to take their Skirmish Kid "crew" and imagine the battle without the physical tabletop. (Ivan system is clever in that it still provides tactical movement, cover, and factors weapon ranges into play. It doesn't really handle explosives or area-damage very well though.)

@PSchweig86@dice.camp I returned to Skirmish Kids though because the other day I was wanting a quick game on the tabletop but I also was thinking "what game do I have that feels like Star Wars Rebels/Clone Wars" in terms of combat flow. I remembered your "Clone Wars" adventures with Skirmish Kids and gave them a go. Stuff like the Charge Reaction Fire is perfect for capturing what I was after. Had so much fun I was instantly thinking "what would I need to do to play this everyday?"

@PSchweig86@dice.camp I've found over the years that, as a solo player, I greatly prefer starting with a skirmish set of rules because I do want combat to have tactical choices but I still want a "character sheet" that fits on an index card. I don't really care about advancement because I'm a Traveller person at heart. Advancement is Patrons, Connections, Faction Rep, Gear, Credits, etc. So 300 pages of Character Traits and all of the balance rules is just not helpful to me.

@PSchweig86@dice.camp So to make Skirmish Kids "work" as a solo adventure RPG-lite game you still have to bolt on a scenario generator... in my case I'm using The Perilous Void, Starforged, and bits of Mythic Game Master Emulator/Crafters/Magazine modules as necessary. So not _really_ accessible to a kid or gaming-newbie sadly...

@PSchweig86@dice.camp What they do is define a set of procedures to play out a Five Parsecs battle without having to set up terrain or pull-out minis. It was meant for 5P players "on the go", maybe traveling but want to keep their campaign turns active. In my case, I'm just incredibly lazy sometimes but want to play out the results of conflict in a solo game without dragging out a battle mat, cargo containers, standees, etc.

@PSchweig86@dice.camp The No-Mini rules were first published in the "Freelancers Handbook, Expansion Book 2" https://modiphius.us/collections/five-parsecs-from-home/products/five-parsecs-from-home-expansion-2-the-freelancers-handbook and then later re-published (and tied into all of the other expansions) in the "Compendium" (which has all three expansion books - but not Tactics or Planetfall as those are... different game modes entirely) https://modiphius.us/collections/five-parsecs-from-home/products/five-parsecs-from-home-compendium-bug-hunt

I do want to comment though that for some, it is hard to ... celebrate on a day like today in the current environment. Putting a target on your back can cause real harm - folks might decide to challenge your right to play a sport you love with the people you love to play with. My heart goes out to everyone who can't really cherish a day like today.

It is Trans Day of Visibility and ... well first of all, Trans Rights are Human Rights. I can't even believe I have to say that but we live in the bad times.

If you want to toss some coin at orgs doing good I recommend https://genderlib.org or https://lambdalegal.org.

@PSchweig86@dice.camp That said I did just score a whole bunch of Traveller standees and the "full fat" Skirmish Kids rules are great for when I have the time to set that up. The Traveller standees were made for the GURPS line and they are very similar in scale to the ones in the WEG Introductory Adventure Game box so that's a plus.

@PSchweig86@dice.camp in case you wondering: yes, you can absolutely "kitbash" Ivan Sorenson's "no minis" rules from the Five Parsecs expansion book with Skirmish Kids to create an entertaining solo system.

Had to make a few changes to the default move/range assumptions in Skirmish Kids and I added a Skill attribute to all figures for throw-under non-combat actions. Then just a few tweaks to Ivan's system to merge the two but the whole works pretty well as a solo skirmish adventure RPG game now.

@joshuaiz @eljas @kagihq Found an issue about it on their feedback tracker: https://orionfeedback.org/d/12437-unable-to-install-orion-from-dmg-update-error-an-error-occurred-while-parsing-the-update-feed/2 (Currently marked as "closed" but people are still reporting the bug so possibly the best place to follow for updates.)
