The thing is, the remaining percentage of your income is smaller when income goes down and not everything you want to buy goes down.
If your income is cut in half but you still have 10% of your income as disposable, the 10% is half what it was in t he city. So if you travel anywhere you have half as much to spend on travel. If your savings is cut in half because it is the same percentsge then you have half as much saved up and are pretty much stuck in lower cost of living areas.
Sure, going out on the town is cheaper while living there, but your options are now limited to lower cost areas.
It is a possible short term benefit for being stuck long term.

The vast majority of the people who live to tell that story had family support from back home an connections before they loved, just like the 'self made millionaires' who started their company in their parents three car garage with hundreds of thousands of dollars invested by family members.
Otherwise it is mostly poor people who are getting trafficked if they o ly have the shirts on their backs because the smugglers stole the meager amount they had saved up.

I like how living in the countryside lets me disconnect from others in a more healthy way. I live in the suburbs now due to supporting family, but would love to be back in a residence clearly disconnected from anyone outside my household. It doesn’t even have to be that far as long as there is separation due to natural barriers like dense foliage or elevation changes.
