I don't know if it's true, but it's said that before a German engineer is licensed, they must first work in the field for quite some time as a technician to help them understand that the stuff they'll be designing isn't just lines on a page, someone will have to make those lines actually work. I suspect that isn't actually true, but it's one of those things that contains truth despite not necessarily being factually true. Definitely a both/and situation. All trade skill no theory, or all theory no trade skill, but the ideal is to have the theory and the trade skill so you can break out big O analysis when something needs to go fast or different memory allocation schemes that aren't immediately intuitive, but you know enough to build a program that ships too.

Other than the fact that some of the actual license carrying engineers I've worked with are so immensely incompetent that they should commit sudoku lest they dishonour their entire bloodline with their continued existence, the idea of saying "no you can't just call yourself an engineer" that Canada enforces is a good one.

"No longer work" is an odd thing. When you're talking about open source, something is "supported" as long as someone wants to work on it. I'm pretty sure to an extent there's still "support" for the original wrt54g.

Honestly, as a teenager who doesn't own the building and doesn't pay the electric bill, don't worry about building infrastructure for yourself and the people around you. Taking on that kind of responsibility is actually going to be kind of annoying because once people rely on it, you can't play anymore -- so just use it yourself, and enjoy it, and maybe you get a chance to show it off, but maybe not. Infrastructure you own but don't have to answer to anyone for is important for that purpose. After all, maybe you don't want jellyfin in the end, and you can just kill it. My family uses our jellyfin all the time, because it's set up exactly how we want. It has all my wife's favorite DVDs ripped and on it, it has my son's favorite movies, it even has strange stuff like the video of me driving in a demolition derby or baby photos or comic books -- it's my thing, I can put whatever I want on there and that's what makes it great. We have a great workflow -- we have android TV, and the jellyfin for android TV app, so we just open it up and everything is right there. It's well-done enough that if you didn't know it's something I host in my basement in the rafters right above the washer and dryer you'd never know it isn't just a normal streaming service. Some people won't see the benefit of having this thing you control and own and are responsible for. But did you know that you can't buy the original Star Wars anymore, only the modified editions from later on? Did you know that there are movies you can't watch anywhere because the licensing is in limbo? Did you know there's public domain movies that are important to cinema history that you won't find on movie streaming sites? So it's not so cut and dry. Keep playing. When you find really cool things that nobody else knows about or sees the value in, it's like a secret door in your house nobody else believes is there, you can sneak in and go on this adventure.

After 10 years of every news outlet being pretending the world ended because a couple elections went the wrong way, it probably looks like that to people who just feel like that was normal. Honestly, I'm happy to see a bit of balance returning. I don't want the pendulum to swing the other way in the same way, I think it'd be exhausting.

Neither is correct. 440m underground is deep enough that you're well under the cold temperatures immediately underground, but not so deep it's painfully hot. It's probably a super stable temperature year round, and you could probably spend all day every day at 440m and the worst you'd have is it's pretty stuffy being surrounded by rock. Ventilation is key in something like that, because it'd be humid and without getting fresh air it gets stale and eventually could get quite dangerous as well.

playing with postmarketos on a Motorola G4 Play.

I went with phosh, and I'm actually impressed. Compared to my first time using real linux on a phone with my pinephone, this is actually surprisingly smooth, and a lot of it seems pretty intuitive. I think the browser it ships with is a desktop browser, and I have every reason to believe it could work with other desktop browsers.

Of course, the CPU is lacking, it only has 2GB of RAM (and only 8GB of flash), and I don't think it has any 3d acceleration so it's hardly a daily driver, but I only installed postmarketos on it because I wanted an aarch64 device running linux to complete a future project, but it really was shocking how snappy it was and how intuitive phosh is.

I'm expecting to get my hands on something considerably more modern in the near future, I'll have to give it a shot again once I do.

I just heard there's people cancelling nitro subscriptions on discord.

I never understood why anyone would pay for nitro on discord. They're like the dread pirate Roberts meets a used car salesman. "Please buy nitro. I'll probably ban you tomorrow."

To honor NoFX putting out an album about how much they agree with the bilionaires and world leaders who tell them what to think, I present this AI slop, a 100% corporate AI approved punk song.

AI is pretty good at playing the 4 cords required for this brand of punk.

Latest upgrade to this dollar store toy. The original car didn't have any kind of antenna on the car, and so the remote range was basically within arm distance.

I bought an antenna and replaced the one on the remote, then drilled a hole through the body and welded the antenna in the body (Those plastic welders with the metal reinforcements are both very interesting and useful and totally useless depending on what you expect out of it), then connected the antenna to the internal connection which was basically just taped to the roof.

Preliminary test showed that now I can use the remote way past the old range, which is all I'd hoped to accomplish. While I was down there I found that the body already had some cracks because it's 1/64" plastic and you'd get more material out of a coke bottle, so I welded them shut and reinforced the opposing side similarly.

This should've been a Honda Civic, because the upgrades do nothing to improve the value of the thing but cost several times the car's actual worth.

Just because you redefine "a cold" as only diseases caused by rhinovirus doesn't mean cold weather doesn't have a direct effect on the body that might look exactly like a cold, meaning it is for all intents and purposes a cold regardless of the cause. It's an etymological sleight of hand where you redefine a common disease by the vector you want it to be caused by and ignore counterfactuals.

I spent some time creating a server library and updating my client library for a certain protocol in FreeBASIC.

I really wanted to set it up so it's very simple and straightforward, but you could also use it for more if you wanted to.

One thing i did which is probably normal process for software developers but I'm just a retard from the sticks is I created a validation file that starts a server and a client and tests both end to end by testing each routine against itself and then also testing failure scenarios to prove it fails successfully.

Sped up development a lot, since I could use the client to prove the server and the server to prove the client and I could develop both at once to meet in the middle in the validation program.

Obviously I had to test against a reference implementation (and did), but it's like going through your own books before an audit -- It was easy to find problems before they became an issue I had to troubleshoot against a server or client I didn't write.

There's a saying that has changed a lot over the years due to inflation, but only in becoming more and more true: "It's possible to become a millionaire through honesty and hard work. But not a billionaire." When that was first said, a millionaire was worth the equivalent of 19 million dollars today. Today, someone working a fairly normal job and saving consistently will become a millionaire in their lifetimes.

I never even thought about it until you mentioned it, but this is true. Voting has always been fairly easy in Canada. To vote I just show up at the place to vote. I obviously need to bring photo id, we're not a backwater third world banana Republic like the United states, but even as just an 18 year old it was really easy to vote. You walk in, you check the box, you go on with your day.

RSS is great. For podcasts, but also for updates from websites. I've got my news app in nextcloud, and it's just become where I get my news because it brings a bunch of totally different news sources together. Friendica has a really cool feature where you can subscribe to RSS feeds and they just show up on your feed. I ended up migrating to another platform, but that's one big feature I miss from that platform.
